A Romantic Weekend – Northwoods Style

Plan the Perfect Valentine’s Day Weekend in Phelps, Wisconsin!

Romantic Weekend Vacation for TwoNothing says love like a steamy kiss in the fresh air, a heart drawn on the ice, or a laugh sprinkled with snowflakes. You may be thinking that dinner and a movie is the romantic way to go this Valentine’s Day – you may want to reconsider! Romance (done right) brings two people closer together, reunites a bond, sparks a flame. And nature’s playground is the perfect backdrop to strengthen a new relationship or revel in the shared memories of love.

If you are dreaming of making memories that will last a lot longer than a box of chocolates, you may want to try a Northwoods Valentine’s Day weekend. (The chocolate is still a good idea!)  Not sure how to plan the perfect Valentine’s Day weekend getaway (or stay-cation)? Well, we have some ideas for you!

Before we can even get started with the romantic vacation, you are going to need just the right lodging for your stay. You might consider a historic cabin on the shore of Long Lake, or perhaps a private villa on Spectacle Lake may be more your style. Key amenities for this particular weekend are a fantastic view and a cozy fireplace. *Be sure to visit our local business directory to find just the right lodging for all of your trips north.

Kicking off a Weekend Vacation for Two…

Friday, February 12th

11:00 am – Sharing experiences is what makes the great outdoors so romantic. Start your weekend right with some good ol’ Up North ice fishing. When the flag goes up, the joint sense of accomplishment will be just the right start to a weekend of bonding.

Romantic Dining Destinations2:00 pm – Head up to Land O’Lakes to enjoy a late lunch, a historic hand-hewn log lodge with a giant fireplace the perfect setting. You are going to want to keep it light this late in the afternoon, so we suggest sharing a couple of appetizers – perhaps a shrimp cocktail with a few must-have Wisconsin cheese curds.

3:00 pm – Now that your taste buds are happy, it’s time to please the eyes. Visit the local art gallery to admire and browse the creativity of local artisans. You may find a perfect piece to commemorate your special weekend. Use the moment to discover more about your loved one’s tastes and impressions. Then, take a quiet drive to explore the town.

5:00 pm – A weekend in Wisconsin isn’t complete without enjoying a Friday Night Fish Fry, along with a perfectly mixed old-fashioned. Take our word for it – lingering over a shared dessert is the best part!

7:00 pm – Wasn’t that just the perfect start to the weekend? Now it’s time to make some popcorn, put on a movie, and snuggle up for the evening!

Add a Little Excitement to the Romance…

Saturday, February 13th

8:00 am – Start your Saturday adventure off right with a breakfast of Irish Hash and a fantastic view of North Twin Lake. You are going to need the Snowmobile Adventuresenergy! While you eat, spread out the snowmobile map to plan out your day.

10:30 am – It’s time to hit the trails! The snowmobile trails in Phelps are some of the best-groomed in Wisconsin, and sharing the thrill together makes them even more special. (For an added bonus, stop along the trail for a quick snowball fight.)

11:30 am – If you planned just right, you should reach the intersection of Trails 45N and 6W right about lunch time. Join the Phelps Snowmobile Club for their trailside brat fry for a tasty meal around a bonfire with live music and good company. It just doesn’t get any better than this! Then ride on over to Conover for even more fun.

1:00 pm – You should get to Conover just in time to share a laugh with the brave teams competing in Snowshoe Baseball at the Northwoods Blizzard Blast. Then, strike up some loving competition with a Horse Drawn Scenic Ridesround of ice bowling. Take a romantic horse-drawn scenic ride, and warm up with a cup of hot cocoa while browsing the artisan bazaar. Feeling adventurous? Give snowboarding a try, or take part in the Recliner Races for a chance to win $100.

6:00 pm – Don’t rush away from Conover, because the most romantic part of the weekend will happen at dusk. When the fireworks display lights up the winter sky with color and the crowd oohs and aahs, THIS is your moment.

7:00 pm – After so much excitement, you are going to be starving. We recommend heading south for maple-glazed salmon or a perfectly cooked ribeye, smothered in Jack Daniels sauce. Again, sharing dessert is a must – indulging is part of the holiday!

9:00 pm – What better way to end the day than cozied up by the fireplace with a glass of wine or cup of cocoa? Stay up late just talking by the glow of the fire.

And Close with a Kiss!

Sunday, February 14th

8:00 am – Now that you have sparked the flame and are feeling so connected, a special breakfast at an inviting, friendly restaurant is just the way to go. No matter what you order, we know you will love the Bakers Surprise and leave happy.

Romantic Winter Sports9:30 am – The time for busyness and excitement is over. It’s time to discover how quiet and magical the forests of Phelps are in the winter, with the snow blanketing the trees and glistening in the sun. Head out on snowshoe, cross-country ski, or by foot for a bit of fresh air and wonder. Be sure to bring a camera because winter is a great time for spotting wildlife through the trees and you are going to want to capture a moment or two. You won’t believe how peaceful the world can be, and when you stop for THE kiss, it will seem as if you are the only two people alive in the world. (If you were planning a special surprise, now is the time!)

As your weekend comes to an end and day-to-day life sets back in, the memories that you will have created this Valentine’s Day weekend are sure to stick in your mind and your heart. You will be refreshed, happy, and closer together than ever before. What could be more romantic than a weekend in the Northwoods? We can’t think of a single thing!
