If you are interested in Nordic skiing, or back country off-trail skiing, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest awaits you. This 1.5 million acre preserve is ideal for ski touring or adventurous day of Nordic skiing. And by getting off the beaten path, you will have the whole forest to yourself (or at least it will feel like it!). The snow-covered pines can be breathtaking, and you may spot a deer or other wildlife on your journey.

Cross Country Ski Trails

The Phelps Cross Country Skiing and Hiking Trail meanders through lush forests of maple, birch, and basswood. This picturesque ski trail is a 1-mile looped trail, perfect for beginners trying the winter sport out for the first time or sharing with a younger generation. For a day on groomed XC ski trails, take a drive to Land O’Lakes and enjoy the 13K Land O’ Lakes Trail. The east trail is ideal for all skill levels, while the west trail is a bit more challenging with hilly terrain through a hardwood forest. For even more cross-country trails, visit the neighboring town of Conover to find over 46 miles of trails for varied skill levels.
