Horseback Riding
There’s nothing quite like being surrounded by nature with no one in sight, just you and your horse. Surrounded by the Chequamegon-Nicolet Forest and with only 13 people per square mile, Phelps is a quiet horseback riding destination. Your chances of running into another person can be as low as you like! The quiet roads running through the Nicolet National Forest offer scenic areas for horseback riding. There is little traffic, especially in the early morning hours, and the views will take your breath away. You can even plan camping trips with your horses! View horseback riding trails and horse camping information in the Chequamegon-Nicolet Forest. Wilderness camping in the BlackJack Wilderness Area or the national forest is easily accessible on horseback from the Vista Lakes trails. You will find several horseback riding stables close to Phelps, just a few miles up the road in Eagle River and St. Germain. This is a great outing for your family vacation, especially after a few days on the lake. Horseback riding lessons are available, as well. And if you are visiting Vilas County in the winter, be sure to take a romantic sleigh ride through downtown Eagle River! Before heading out in the great outdoors of Northern Wisconsin, it is important to understand your horse’s limitations, as well as your own. It is good manners to try to keep the trail clean and leave things as they were. When approaching another rider or person, please let them know that you are approaching and do so at a walk. Most importantly, when enjoying the forests of Northern Wisconsin by horseback, follow the age old rule about leaving nothing behind and taking nothing with you. Happy Trails! We invite you to share your favorite stories about hiking, biking, and horseback riding on our Phelps Wisconsin Facebook page.
