Take a day trip adventure to the Headwaters of the Wisconsin River!
The start of the Wisconsin River is just 7 miles west of downtown Phelps. The Wisconsin River travels nearly the entire state and provided a highway for travelers including Native Americans, explorers, trappers, traders and settlers. The Wisconsin River is known as the “hardest working river in America” because of the many power dams and storage dams along the river. Learn more about this hardworking river.
Take a short hike back to the Lac Vieux Desert Reservoir Park to see the Wisconsin River begin its journey out of Lac Vieux Desert. The hike takes you through tall pines and along the river before your arrive at the park area with stunning views of Lac Vieux Desert and the start of the Wisconsin River. A historical sign is posted to explain the history of the 4,260 acre lake and the start of the River.
Free parking is available in the parking lot at the start of the trail. Picnic tables and grills are available in the park as well.

Pro Tips:
Bring your fishing gear! There is a variety of panfish, bass, walleye and even some Northern Pike to be caught. From the park you will be able to fish both Lac Vieux Desert and the Wisconsin River.
Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the peacefulness of the area on one of the many picnic tables.
