There’s no better way to celebrate the turn of the seasons than a small town festival full of scarecrows, tasty autumn foods, and pumpkins! The 5th Annual Phelps Scarecrow Fest will be held this weekend, Saturday, September 13th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hosted by the Phelps Women’s Club, this family friendly free event promises to be a blast of fall fun with great food, live entertainment, fun activities and even Pumpkin Chuckin’!
Picture-perfect Setting for a Great Event in Phelps!
The fall festivities will be held downtown Phelps, where visitors can enjoy all the day’s offerings on the shore of North Twin Lake, with the autumn colors reflecting on the water. The views in Phelps, although always stunning, present an amazing canvas of color as the leaves turn bright shades of orange, red and yellow. You couldn’t ask for a better environment for a fall festival than here in Phelps!
Visit Scarecrow Fest for Pumpkin Chuckin’ & Fall Fun for All Ages!
There will be activities throughout the afternoon for all ages. Children will have the chance to try their luck with archery and participate in a variety of games. And they are sure to love the Pet Parade taking place at noon, thanks to the Humane Society of Vilas County!
Enjoy a round of Bingo (or two!), and then take a romantic hayride through the vibrant forest overlooking North Twin Lake. Sea plane rides and kayak demonstrations are planned for the day, and of course, pumpkin chuckin’! Try your luck slinging a pumpkin at the target on the water – after all, where else would you get the satisfaction of manning a giant sling shot?
When your stomach starts rumbling, grab a bowl of chili, courtesy of the Phelps Women’s Club, or sample fares from local chefs. Visit the Miller beer stand to quench your thirst. And attendees are encouraged to participate in the local wine tasting contest, and cast your vote!
Arts & Crafts, Antique Cars, & Live Entertainment!
What would a Northwoods festival be without music? Phelps Scarecrow Fest will feature country and bluegrass music from DJ Hot Toddy from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Then kick up your heels to lively tunes from Jeff and AJ Walker’s Polka Band. Or enjoy the melodies while browsing quilt displays and craft booths.
Don’t miss out on a live chainsaw carving demonstration by Danczyk Woodcraft, as Chad creates wildlife from wood in this unique and challenging art form. Check out antique tractors and boats on display, as well as the Shine & Show street rod and corvette car show.
And, oh boy, the scarecrows! The scarecrows will be out and about for the festivities, and you never know where you will spot one! These traditional fall creations have been the harvest symbol of hope and growth for over 3000 years, thus a wonderful inspiration for a fall festival. With creative faces, fun displays and cool clothes, the Phelps scarecrows are each one-of-a-kind!
Phelps Women’s Club – Supporting the Community for 75 Years!
This fun Phelps event is hosted by the Phelps Women’s Club, with the support of many great sponsoring organizations and businesses. The Phelps Women’s Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to the support of the Phelps Community. Currently, the Club consists of 48 members, with membership open to anyone. And this February will mark the 75th anniversary of this wonderful club’s founding in 1940!
The Women’s Club began with the goal of inspiring a passion for reading in the community, and in 1934, facilitated the opening of a library to meet this goal. In 1949, the group purchased a building from the DNR and created a new home for the library. The Women’s Club maintained it for years, with help from operating volunteer Eleanor Ellis, and generous donations from Lillian Kerr and Vera and Elmer Wavering.
In 2001, the club published the Phelps Memories Book, which is available for sale at the Phelps Historical Museum. Today, half of the Women’s Club funds raised go in support to the Phelps Public Library, which has continued to grow over the years and expand its services and learning opportunities. Additionally, the club provides several scholarships to graduating high school students and adult continuing education. Amongst other community support, the Phelps Women’s Club is greatly appreciated for their volunteer efforts on keeping Phelps beautiful with their Phelps Beautification Fund. If you enjoy the lovely flower displays as you drive through Phelps, you have the Phelps Women’s Club to thank!
