Groundbreaking & Fundraising for the Conover-Phelps Hiking/Biking Trail
Today was an important step for the future of trails in Phelps and for Great Headwaters Trails. A crowd gathered on Muskrat Creek Road this morning for the ceremonial groundbreaking of the second segment of the Conover-Phelps Hiking/Biking Trail.
The first 3 miles of trail were completed and hard-surfaced last summer, with all eyes looking forward to the day when the off-road trail will connect the two towns. Although early season rains held off construction just a bit, the crews are now hard at work on the next 5.5 miles. And fundraising is already well underway for the last 2 miles that will bring the trail downtown Phelps.
This is just one of many wonderful hiking and biking trails in Vilas County. Phelps also features the Vista Lake Biking Area and the Spectacle – Kentuck Hiking Trail, to name a few. With continued dedicated efforts like those of Great Headwaters Trail, we can all look forward to growing options for silent sports lovers and families that want to enjoy the great outdoors ‘on the beaten path’.

Fundraising Luncheon Planned
Great Headwaters Trails has planned a fundraiser luncheon for Saturday, August 12th at Sunrise Lodge on Lac Vieux Desert. Enjoy a lunch buffet of salad, fruit, sandwich and soup, as well as dessert and a beverage, all for only $10. All ticket proceeds help to build the last two miles of the Conover-Phelps Community Biking and Hiking Trail. Tickets are available at various locations, including the Phelps Chamber office at 2429 State Highway 17 in Phelps.
GHT Annual Meeting Announced
Great Headwaters Trails will be holding it’s annual meeting at Wavering Park in Phelps on August 15th at 5:00 pm. This is a great time to find out more about the Conover-Phelps Trail development, plans for the final 2 miles, and an overall picture of trails in the county.
