Meet the Phelps Chamber Board of Directors!

Phelps ChamberThere are many theories out there about what constitutes a strong board of directors for organizations like the Phelps Chamber of Commerce. Should the individuals have a strong background in business management? Be fiscally responsible and budget-orientated? Well-known in the community or capable of remaining unbiased on local issues?

We have another idea about the qualifications of the Chamber Board, and it’s all about heart. When you genuinely care, when you have ideas to share, if you are an individual who approaches every project with enthusiasm and passion – you better not tell us unless you are ready to join the Phelps Chamber Board! We are only slightly teasing, but in reality, it is exactly these qualities that our current Board of Directors exhibit. Pair enthusiasm, diverse backgrounds, and unique individuality and you have the makings for an exciting Chamber of Commerce!

Detail-Orientated Wins the Race – Meet Rae Ann Volkmann!

When it comes to running an organization, the details are crucial, which is why we are so thankful for Board Treasurer Rae Ann Volkmann. She has the experience needed, from her years with North Twin Builders, to handle the Chamber budget and participate in the management of the Chamber. She is a part of the Merchandise team, which is hard at work to create a line of Phelps apparel and memorabilia. Rae Ann is also an enthusiastic event volunteer who really gives her all, no matter how exhausted one might be at the end of the day.

Rae Ann appreciates the opportunity to be involved with such a dynamic and forward-thinking organization, and is looking forward to kicking off Chamber networking events in 2015. If you have questions for Rae Ann, please email

The Mind of a Marketer – Meet Jolyn Kyler!

In addition to acting as Board Secretary, Jolyn Kyler is active with the Chamber Marketing Committee and on a number of teams, including the Visitor’s Guide team that is developing a booklet to highlight the area. As a website developer for KBLI Designs, she is vital to the committee for website discussion, search engine optimization techniques, and for improving the overall marketing reach of the Chamber. Jolyn is as thorough as fellow Board director Rae Ann, although each sees different details in every situation.

Jolyn really enjoys her seat on the Board, particularly because of the team spirit and excitement that she witnesses, and she can’t wait for the latest marketing efforts to take off. If you would like to get ahold of Jolyn or are interested in joining the Marketing Team, please email

Creativity Meets Practicality – Meet Renee Snook!

Phelps WI EventBoard Director Renee Snook, of The Dogwoods – Pleasures of the Northwoods, is the picture of balance, often presenting creative solutions while making sure that everyone remembers the bigger picture. As her fellow board members ask what and when, Renee follows through with the hows and whys. She is active with the Maple Syrup Fest event (make sure to stop by and say hello to her on April 11th at the Phelps School!) and is a proud member of the Merchandise team, a perfect fit given her years of administrative and management experience.

Renee is focused on the best interests of Phelps and our business members, and is proud that the Phelps Chamber can help to make a difference in our community. To learn how you can get involved, email Renee at

A Champion for the Town – Meet Lorin Johnson!

Board Director Lorin Johnson could be called the voice of reason with his calm demeanor and manner of speaking, and his passion for the town of Phelps is easy to see. In addition to over 20 years of experience in construction with Lampert Lumber and as a long-time resident of Phelps, Lorin brings his unique past experiences as Town Supervisor, Vilas County Supervisor representing Phelps, and Chairman of the Phelps Planning Commission. Although Lorin has only just recently joined the Board, he is eager to get to work on the Membership Committee and will continue to participate with Maple Syrup Fest.

Lorin is excited to watch the member businesses grow, prosper and be a part of the Phelps Downtown Revitalization. To learn more about the Membership Committee, please email

The Event Enthusiast – Meet Matt Hendrickson!

4th of JulyBoard Director Matt Hendrickson is our event enthusiast, and he brings his years of experience in the restaurant industry and as a non-profit event volunteer to the 4th of July team. But, as is apparent from even a quick conversation, Matt’s enthusiasm is a whole-hearted personality trait. He represents Superior Content Solutions, and is diving into the world of social media to continue to enhance Phelps’ online presence as part of the Social Marketing team.

Matt appreciates this opportunity to give something back to the community in which he was raised, and is looking forward to a spectacular 4th of July event. If you are interested in helping out at this year’s celebration, you can reach him at

Hey, it’s working!! Good! (I tried earlier and couldn’t write anything.)

I’m so happy that Lorin Johnson is on board. He is a good man, good worker and will be an asset to the Chamber. Also happy to see Jolyn, Renee, Rae Ann & Matt Hendrickson. You look to be a good group.

I notice as I’ve scouted the Chamber that there really doesn’t appear to be many Events. Is there a calender someplace that would list all the events for the rest of the year? I have a friend that has been asking me if there will be an Event here during the summer so that he could combine it with his trip to the Hayward area. Will there be music at the Lake side? What about the Lion’s Club,
Woman’s Club, Library, Fireman, Museum???? I think it would be just great if you could come up
with that. Please think about it or if it has already been done, let me know where it is.

Thanks so much for all you are doing for our Community.

Thank you so much for the positive feedback! We do have a great group here in Phelps. For the events, try to see the full calendar. This will continue to be updated throughout the year, so make sure to stop back. Also, Phelps Rocks 365 will include music at many of the local club/organization events and other dates. Details and schedules for that are being worked out now, and we will be sure to let you know. Following along with us on Facebook is also a great way to stay updated about events and happenings in the area. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and suggestions!
      – Celeste
