Northwoods Cross Country Skiing: Picturesque Trails in Vilas County, Wisconsin!
Looking for quiet and picturesque cross country skiing in the northwoods? Phelps in Vilas County has it all! The Phelps Cross Country Skiing and Hiking Trail meanders through forests of maple, birch, and basswood. This off-the-beaten path is a 1-mile looped trail that offers solitude and beautiful snow-covered scenery for any nature lover. Established for traditional-style northwoods cross country skiing, this trail is maintained in partnership with the Phelps Chamber of Commerce.
Then, there is the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, a 1.5 million acre preserve, spread across Vilas County and northern Wisconsin. It has approximately 24 groomed cross country ski trails totaling 263 miles. And, when the ice is safe, lake skiing can be quite invigorating as long as you follow safety precautions and maintain adequate distance from ice shanties and snowmobilers. (Discover the many pristine Northern Wisconsin Lakes here.) Whether you enjoy classical, skating, touring or backcountry skiing, you’ll find whatever type of cross country ski trail you’re looking for in the northwoods of Wisconsin.
